Trump Owes It To America To Protect Himself
I wholeheartedly join those who breathed a sigh of relief that our leader Donald Trump was unhurt in this second assassination attempt on his life.
But this narrow brush with catastrophe must be the last such episode.
Many will assess the conduct of local police at the venue and of the Secret Service on duty, but I want to discuss the one thing we can influence: To persuade Donald Trump to avoid any risks for the rest of the election.
It is a hopeful sign that he apparently no longer appears in public unless he is protected by a bulletproof shield. But obviously, further self-imposed restrictions on his movement and visibility need to be discussed.
He may have to give up golf for the next two months. Every American depends on him and he has to stop any activity that puts him out in public without adequate protection.
This restriction does not need to last forever, but while this election is hanging in the balance, we must insist on having him take unusual and extreme measures to assure his own safety.
Our national security cannot long be hanging by a thread.
We need to be quite severe and ruthless in demanding that Trump do a better job of protecting himself now that two assassination attempts have been made.
We must not honor his heedless folly or celebrate his narrow brushes with death. To honor our country, he must do it the good of staying safe whatever the curbs on his freedom
It is worth recalling the lines of the poet William Wordsworth in his immortal poem Resolution and Independence:
“But how can He expect that others should
Build for him, sow for him, and at his call
Love him, who for himself will take no heed at all?”
