As negotiations proceed toward a July 20th goal for a deal with Iran, it is increasingly likely that the West will cave in to Iranian demands:
• Iran now has 10,000 operating centrifuges; it wants permission to have 100,000
• Iran wants no restraints on its plutonium plant which can also make bomb grade fuel
• Iran wants no limits on its ballistic missile program
• Iran wants sharp limits on UN inspections to assure compliance
• Iran wants a short term agreement; the West wants a term of several decades
In return, of course, Iran wants a total lifting of economic sanctions which have taken a decade to legislate and enforce.
If the Interim deal under which sanctions were relaxed is any guide, we can expect Obama to fold on these key issues.
Now Senator Fred Corker (R-Tenn.), ranking member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, wants Congress to be able to vote up or down on the Iran deal.
Unfortunately, the vote would be non-binding but it will be important nonetheless. It will also force the Administration to reveal the entire deal to the public (as opposed to the still secret addendum to the Interim Agreement).
But Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, is opposing even the limited Corker measure.
