At Last! A Democrat Challenges Biden
Marianne Williamson, the author of several best sellers, futurist, spiritualist, and guru, is stepping forth to run in a Democratic primary against Biden. She brings with her a potent message: The emperor has no clothes!
For a year or more, all credible Democratic challengers to Biden have chickened out, observed party discipline, and stayed out of the way. But now Williamson, braves the party bosses and is about to declare her candidacy. About Biden, she seems to say metaphorically that there is no there there.
During Bill Clinton’s 1996 campaign for re-election, I met frequently with Williamson (and her colleague Naomi Wolff) to discuss social trends as they might relate to the campaign. After being introduced to American — and particularly Arkansan — voters as the boy governor when he first took office at the tender age of 31, Clinton ran for president as everyone’s buddy.
Voters could easily imagine jogging with Bill and stopping into a McDonalds for a cheeseburger. But, as Williamson and Wolff advised, now was the time to introduce an older, more mature Bill Clinton as he sought a second term.
They founded the “fatherhood agenda” in the campaign, highlighting drug use in schools, educational standards, school uniforms, parental leave, child support enforcement, and steps to stop the sale of tobacco to minors. It helped Bill Clinton to grow up before the nation’s eyes and get re-elected.
Now Williamson steps forth to state the obvious: That Biden is too old, too frail, too demented, too senile, and too fragile to run for re-election. At the end of his second term, he would be 86!
None of the others — Newsom, Buttigieg, Sanders, O’Rourke, Hillary, Michelle, Harris, AOC, Klobuchar, Booker or any of the others — has the guts to step forth and say it.
Williamson will run surprisingly strongly in the primaries. Biden has to debate her and she will present a female, energetic, insightful and even profound alternative to the president’s scripted banalities.
She doesn’t need much money. Her books have a combined sales of three million and have earned her a spot as a frequent guest on Oprah.
She is best known for her daily spiritual guide based on Helen Schucman’s book, A Course in Miracles.
Her own books include her 2019 bestseller A Politics of Love, The Age of Miracles, Healing the Soul of America, Illuminata, and Everyday Grace.
A captivating speaker, she’ll be a stark contrast to Biden. It may be that she is fated to be a latter day sequel to former Senator Eugene McCathy, who galvanized the anti-war movement in 1967 by challenging Lyndon Johnson in a Democratic primary, going where no other dared tread. McCarthy’s audacity led directly to Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s candidacy and Johnson’s withdrawal from the race.
Will her candidacy spur Hillary to come out of her thinly veiled retirement? Or galvanize one of the other cowards who won’t come forth on their own?
